It’s a Grande Punto, but not as you know it. This dark horse has been built for power – and it shows. We’ve widened the track by 6mm, deepened both bumpers, and added sideskirts, a spoiler and sparkling 17” alloy wheels. The front bumper has extra large air intakes to cool off the turbocharged engine, and the headlights are dramatically offset by dark surrounds, making this one seriously moody looking car. Highlighted in all the right places by the iconic Scorpion badge. Beautiful isn’t it?
Under the bonnet, the 1.4 litre, 16 valve engine delivers a thumping 155bhp and a peak torque of 206Nm at 5000rpm. Activating the Sport mode ups the ante to 230Nm of torque at 3000rpm. To handle all that power, we’ve made a few changes to the brakes and chassis: the suspension is 20% firmer, the anti-roll bar is thicker, and the ride height lower by 10mm. Meaning you can hug bends with ease, while enjoying a ride that’s surprisingly comfortable.
Inside, the car is top-to-toe Abarth. Everything has been designed to evoke a racing look and feel, from the carbon effect central console and sporty instrument panel, to the leather-covered steering wheel and gear knob, beautifully finished with red stitching. Then there’s the seats: black and bucket style, with built-in head restraints and lateral supports to cushion you from everything the road can throw at you. You can even get these finished in leather too if you like. Nice.
With performance like this, you can rest assured the Abarth Grande Punto has safety features to match. There are disc brakes on all wheels, with ventilated front brakes. The front springs are 20% firmer, the anti-roll bar is thicker, and the ride 10mm lower, so you can tackle the sharpest bends without compromising safety. ESP, which helps you control the car in tricky handling situations, comes as standard. And last but not least, the car comes fitted with six airbags.
