Lipscomb Abarth Returned to Racing for Home Event at Brands Hatch

Kent motor dealer Lipscomb Abarth and its motorsport partner Pulce Racing recruited a title-winning driver for their return to the Zing Trofeo Abarth 500 race series on the 4th & 5th September.

Reigning Historic Formula Ford champion Darren Burke joined the team for the 6th round of the championship at Brands Hatch – home turf for both Darren and Lipscomb Abarth.

A successful test session at Brands Hatch saw Darren immediately on the pace in the front-wheel-drive Abarth 500, further boosting the team’s confidence of a successful debut result.

"The Abarth 500 is a complete change for me – one that requires a totally different style of driving to the rear-wheel-drive race cars I’m used to. In fact, I’ve never raced a front-wheel-drive car on slicks before, so it’s an exciting new challenge," said Darren.

"I adapted quickly to the car during the test session this week, and showed I was immediately on the pace, so I’m confident we can get a good result. Being a local lad, I know Brands Hatch very well too, so we will get the added benefit of a home race advantage."

Darren originally tested the Lipscomb car before the start of the season, but was unable to take up his seat with the team due to his commitments in the Historic Formula Ford championship – the title he went on to win. Darren joined Lipscomb and Pulce Racing for the final two races of the Zing Trofeo Abarth 500 championship, following Gareth Howell’s withdrawal from the series.

Mark Stevens, Sales Director at Lipscomb Abarth, said: "Darren’s arrival was great news for the team and after two races away from the track, we we’re really excited to be returning to the action.

Unfortunately due to technical difficulties with the car in the first race Darren and Lipscomb had a DNF, which then resulted in Darren starting at the back of the grid on the second race but he managed to push his way forwards finally finishing in 7th position.

The 6th round saw the little Abarths joined by the giants of the German DTM race series which resulted in a thrilling weekend at Brands Hatch.
